103 JBT Condensing Steam Turbine Bearing Upgrade
Gulf Coast Bearing & Seal (GCBS) Solves High-Temp Bearing Failures in Steam Turbines
Steam turbines are at a unique risk of premature bearing failure, causing operational downtime due to the overheating of thrust bearings.
GCBS thrust bearing upgrades feature copper backed pads and an offset pivot design, allowing steam turbines to operate with higher load capacity and enhanced load distribution, an improvement from the OEM center pivot configuration and steel backed pads. The copper backing and offset pivot design allows for more effective heat dissipation, significantly lowering operational temperatures.
Using upgraded bearings from GCBS reduces operating temperatures by an average of 45–50°F, with some instances achieving up to an 80°F reduction. These performance improvements not only prevent bearing failures but also extend component life and enhance the turbine’s performance. This solution has been widely adopted in ammonia and chemical plants throughout the U.S.
