After almost three decades serving the petrochemical industry, my business philosophy is tried, tested and proven. It’s also simple: do what’s best for the customer. No matter what product you sell, what you’re really doing is building something—a solution and a relationship—and that takes time. It’s never about a one-time sell.

The customer always comes first, but there’s one more crucial rule: have fun. As president, it’s my job to be sure that my team feels empowered and prepared to do the best job they can, and that means always putting the customer’s needs first, always learning and always having fun. When you do all that, the business is successful.

My career began as a millwright (industrial mechanic) apprenticeship and later went to work on power generation, turbine driven generators. After a number of years as a millwright foreman, I worked with a software company, analyzing manufacturing companies’ operations in order to customize systems management software for each customer. Through all of those experiences, I learned the intricacies of a wide variety of equipment and the systems that use that equipment.

Another thing I learned: the only thing that counts is a total solution. You can offer the best product around, but if the right procedures and systems aren’t in place, the customer won’t see optimal results. That’s why, in addition to offering DuPont™ Vespel® and Kytox®, Boulden provides supervisory and technical support and training.  I do all kinds of training, from pump reliability to pump repair, even cradle-to-grave pump operation and documentation. We’re invested in our customers’ business, not just in sales. That’s what you get with Boulden.

Pump reliability technology is constantly improving and in order to provide solutions to your customer, you have to be adaptable, responsive and eager to learn.

In the ‘90s, I was part of the first team that helped bring composite use in pumps into the mainstream for refining companies. A lot of the work was trial-and-error, and we worked closely with end users to determine the best approach for replacing metals with composite to minimize pump downtime, improve safety and increase the life, reliability and performance of their pumps. Over the next couple of decades, I specialized in technical sales, product line and business unit management, ensuring that I know where application of composite materials bring the best value. Today, I bring all that experience together to envision and create custom solutions for each client’s distinct set of requirements and goals.

Relationships are the key to my business philosophy. Success is all about listening carefully to a client’s needs, following through on every detail and creating a solution that delivers results both immediately and over a pump’s life cycle.

When you call Boulden, you don’t get an automated answering service or voicemail. You always get an experienced, knowledgeable specialist, and a lot of times, you’ll get me. The bulk of my expertise is in rotating equipment, in particular centrifugal pumps that are designed to the API 610 standard. I’ve been working with rotating equipment for more than two decades, and I apply my long-term experience to our clients’ challenges every day.

Whether we are providing reliable access to composite materials, creating a turnkey solution from challenge to design to manufacturing, or offering design assistance on a particular part, our focus is service. Pump reliability is our area of expertise, but we specialize in serving our clients, whatever they might need.

My work is focused on the reliability of rotating equipment. Since 1992, I have worked in multiple roles within the rotating equipment industry, both as a supplier of materials and components and as a customer. For four years, I worked as a refinery rotating equipment engineer which helped me understand what it takes to maximize machinery reliability.

I started using composite materials (specifically Vespel® CR-6100) to upgrade pumps in 1998. I am now recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on the application of composite materials to improve pump reliability and efficiency. My work on upgrading pumps with Vespel® CR-6100 has been published in Hydrocarbon Processing, Pumps & Systems, and at the Texas A&M Pump & Turbomachinery Symposium.

What I have learned from traveling to several hundred plants is that nearly all refineries and petrochemical plants face similar problems. Most plants in the western hemisphere were built more than 20 years ago. The pumps and other rotating machines are old and often frequently operating far from their original design point. By applying Vespel® CR-6100 along with good shop practices, plants can achieve world-class reliability with this older equipment.

As a Boulden International Regional Sales Manager, I am a solutions provider for rotating equipment and associated instrumentations. Ultimately my job is to add value and reduce the long term cost of running the plant equipment, reducing MTBR (mean time between repairs), and increasing the output of each machine - whether it includes one of our products or not. The ultimate goal is to provide a complete cost effective solution proposal to fit each customer’s needs.

I’m a technical expert and project manager specialist, but the most important skill I bring to my job is the ability to adapt to each customer and react to their needs. Creating solutions for mechanical equipment reliability is a process that occurs over time, so the relationship is just as critical as the product. Trust and openness in the relationship is key to ongoing communication to build the right solutions over the long term.

  • Krytox® Improves Safety; Prevents Fluid Leakage and Extends Double Mechanical Seal Life
    May 09, 2013
Installing new agitators and pumps for a reactor with acidic off-gas for a large chemical plant presented challenges in system design, and provided direction for the planning team in determining what lubricants they would use for the system’s mechanical seals.
  • Hot Water Condensate Pumps: Upgrade with DuPont™ Vespel® CR-6100
    Apr 26, 2013
Condensate return pumps often cause reliability problems. Hot water can vaporize, causing pumps to run dry. Hot water is also a notoriously poor lubricant, resulting in excessive wear of traditional materials. Vespel® CR-6100 has been used in dozens of condensate pumps over the years with excellent results. The first known pump to be upgraded to Vespel® CR-6100 was a condensate pump in a refinery, and this simple upgrade increased the MTBR of the pump from 4 months to 9 years.
  • The TEN PUMP RULES for Optimum Pump Performance - Rule #2: PROPER LUBRICATION, Part 1
    Apr 06, 2013
Correct lubrication is essential to pump reliability. Studies have shown that up to 30% pump failures are bearing-related, and nearly all of those failures are due to improper lubrication. In the case of pumps (and the motors or turbines driving the pump), the lubricant can be either oil or grease, and the guidelines for successful application can vary depending on the type of bearing—whether plain, rolling element, or tilt-pad.
